The DPH course draws from various disciplines including public and environmental health, primary health care including community based health care, community development, environment, sociology, psychology, legal and business management disciplines. In this way, the course provides multidisciplinary understanding of public health and development in the context of sustainable development thereby:

increasing portability between qualifications;
enhancing greater consistency in levels of knowledge, skills and competencies achieved; and
ensuring application of common concepts, principles and approaches to different areas of work within the field of public health and development practice.

1.1 Regulatory compliance

The Diploma in Public Health and Community Practice Course is a competency based course delivered in accordance with the requirements of TVET Curriculum Development and Certification Council (CDACC) and the Public Health Officers and Technicians Council – Kenya (PHOTC).

1.2 Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for admission for Diploma in Public Health and Community Practice is a C in KSCE or its equivalent with a minimum pass C in English or Kiswahili and minimum passes C in Biology and Mathematics respectively and minimum passes of C- in any of the following: Chemistry, Physics or Physical science and Building construction/Technical drawing.; or
A certificate in Environmental Health, Public Health, Community Health or Social Work and Community Development or any other relevant field of study from a recognized Institution.

1.3 Course requirements

All courses in the DPH shall be compulsory. The student must be competent in all subjects of the course in order to function effectively in varied public, environmental and community health and development contexts. A Diploma in Public Health and Community Practice shall be awarded to that student who successfully completed the programme as outlined in this syllabus.

2.0 Course structure and coding

The DPH course is organized into modules and units which are offered on a semester and credit hours basis. Each semester runs for 15 weeks. The course content is organized into 16 modules delivered through units that are carefully designed to embrace the theory, practical and lifelong learning aspects of public health and community development.

The modules and units are functionally linked and integrated with Learning through Service (LTS) practice, Value based Learning (VBL) and Evidence based Learning (EBL) that should allow a student to develop the necessary core competencies that are relevant to his/her career goals. The course has foundation modules and units offered in year one and much of the professional contents in years 2 and 3. The specialization electives are offered in year 3.
