ABOUT IDIA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

IDIA College of Technology and Development Studies is a private value based tertiary education institution founded on Christian principles. The primary aim of IDIA College is to foster transformative leadership and sustainable development  through  value-based education, applied research and community service. IDIA College is duly Registered as a Technical and Vocational Education and Training College in accordance with the TVET Act, 2013 under REG NO: TVETA/PRIVATE/TVC/0017/2024.

IDIA College was first established in May 2012 at Valley of Hope Centre in Siaya and was duly registered by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science & Technology (Reg. No. MOHEST /PC/1857/012) . The College has since inception produced graduates who continue to transform society in different capacities.

OUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING FRAMEWORK

IDIA College offers cutting edge and innovative  education and training programs in various health, development and technological fields. Our education and  training programs aim to:

  • Enable learners to acquire discipline specific knowledge, competencies and transferable skills;
  • Impart theoretical and practical problem-solving skills and promote principles of effective and sustainable interventions;
  • Enable learners to acquire ethical and value-based management and leadership competencies;
  • Enable learners to acquire and apply servant leadership attitudes and skills;

Competency based training approach

IDIA College adopts a competency based training approach that provides specified skills, knowledge and attitudes relevant to performance of particular tasks and duties to the standard of performance expected in the marketplace, workplace, industry or field of work/practice. Competency based training entails enabling learners to acquire relevant skills, knowledge and attitudes and their application to effective participation in an industry, field, sector or enterprise. Competency based approach aims to enable trainees acquire skills and competencies to enhance all aspects of performance including:

  1. a) Performing individual tasks;
  2. b) Managing a range of different tasks;
  3. c) Responding to contingencies or breakdowns;
  4. d) Dealing with the responsibilities of the workplace, including working with others; and
  5. e) Managing change.

Training and learning approaches and methods

IDIA College training and learning approach adopts a balance between theoretical/analytical learning techniques on one hand, and practical-ethical learning on the other hand. Thus, to bridge the traditional gap between theory and practice, the programmes uniquely interweave teaching, research, service and value based learning approaches and techniques. The programmes uses adult learning principles, problem-based and student-centred approaches to teaching and learning. Broadly, the programmes adopt a four-pillar training and learning model whose main features include:

(a) Learning through Teaching (LTT);

(b) Knowledge and Evidence based learning (KEBL);

(c) Value based learning (VBL); and

(d) Learning through Service (LTS).

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMMES

IDIA college offers a range of TVET courses and programmes at Certificate (Level 5) and Diploma (Level 6) levels. In addition, IDIA College in collaboration with The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) offers programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The delivery of the programmes is innovative involving a combination of methods including:

  • Physical
  • Hybrid (physical and online modes)
  • Online

The delivery is interactive including lectures, group work, case studies, problem –solving techniques and seminars. Our training programs by design aim to increase the depth of knowledge, skills, competencies and multi-disciplinary understanding of contemporary health and development problems and to positively impact individuals and society in a sustainable way.

Partnerships

In pursuit of its aim, IDIA has established a mentoring partnership with the Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) in teaching, training, research and knowledge exchange, and to offer academic programmes in health and development. In addition, IDIA has also established a partnership with Jet Out2Reach Goshen (JOG), United Kingdom to undertake collaborative research, education, training and youth mentorship programmes targeting especially young people from marginalized and disadvantaged communities.
